?Morphological specialisation for primary nectar robbing in a pollen specialist mining bee (Hymenoptera, Andrenidae)

چکیده
The European mining bee species Andrena lathyri (Andrenidae) is a narrow specialist of flowers Lathyrus and Vicia (Fabaceae), from which both females males gain nectar by primary robbing. Both sexes are equipped with unique proboscis, much longer more strongly angled than in most other bees including the closely related species. comparison between shape proboscis interior host combined field observations revealed that specialised mouthparts A. precisely correspond to dimensions flower position nectary, representing one few known examples morphological adaptation robbing bees. For uptake, bee’s head inserted laterally under standard petal before it moved towards base, thereby slitting calyx longitudinally depth necessary reach nectary inside proboscis. Nectar-robbing individuals able adapt their behaviour different lengths over varying distances. Except for slit calyx, does not damage any parts allowing normal fruit development.

Nestmate Relatedness in a Communal Bee, Perdita Texana (hymenoptera: Andrenidae), Based on Dna Fingerprinting.
Perdita texana is a facultatively communal bee species with up to 28 females per nest. We used multilocus DNA fingerprinting to test the hypothesis that nestmates are more closely related to each other than are nonnestmates. The mean band sharing proportion among pairwise nestmate comparisons did not differ significantly from the mean among nonnestmate comparisons [P = 0.787 (df = 484)]. Althou...
متن کاملFloral Nectar Guide Patterns Discourage Nectar Robbing by Bumble Bees
Floral displays are under selection to both attract pollinators and deter antagonists. Here we show that a common floral trait, a nectar guide pattern, alters the behavior of bees that can act opportunistically as both pollinators and as antagonists. Generally, bees access nectar via the floral limb, transporting pollen through contact with the plant's reproductive structures; however bees some...
متن کاملFemale Foraging and Intranest Behavior of a Communal Bee, Perdita portalis (Hymenoptera: Andrenidae)
Ann. Entomol. Soc. Am. 84(5): 537-548 (1991) ABSTRACT Female Perdita portalis Timberlake are ground-nesting, partially bivoltine, communal bees that inhabit the deserts and arid grasslands of Arizona, New Mexico, and northern Mexico. From 2 to 29 adult females may share a single nest. Nests are commonly reused from year to year and may become very large, with >200 overwintering prepupae, althou...
متن کاملSocial transmission of nectar-robbing behaviour in bumble-bees.
Social transmission of acquired foraging techniques is rarely considered outside of a vertebrate context. Here, however, we show that nectar robbing by bumble-bees (Bombus terrestris)-an invertebrate behaviour of considerable ecological significance-has the potential to spread through a population at the accelerated rates typical of social transmission. Nectar robbing occurs when individuals ei...
متن کاملSocial Learning: Nectar Robbing Spreads Socially in Bumble Bees
Social transmission of learned behaviour is well documented in vertebrates but much less so among invertebrates. New research shows that nectar robbing can spread socially among bumble bees, even in the absence of nectar-robbing models.
